The Art of Jim Woodson: Landscape and the Poetics of Placecelebrates fifty years of painting by the renowned Texas artist Jim Woodson. The book traces the arc and significance of his career while exploring the distinctive vision that animates his expressive interpretations of the Southwestern landscape.
A prolific painter with studios in Fort Worth, Texas, and near Abiquiú, New Mexico, Woodson has presented his work in more than thirty solo exhibitions, and his paintings are held in museum, corporate, and private collections. In recognition of his artistic achievement, the Texas Commission on the Arts named him Texas Artist of the Year in 2013.
A longtime professor of painting at Texas Christian University, Woodson influenced generations of students, and his reputation as an inspiring teacher led former President George W. Bush to seek him out as one of his art instructors.
The book draws on Woodson's lived experience, art-historical contexts (such as the American tradition of landscape painting), and the geographic environments that have shaped his artistic imagination. An introductory essay by art historian Mark Thistlethwaite examines the evolution of Woodson's work, while an interview with former museum director Dr. Luanne McKinnon offers insight into his creative process.
At the heart of the volume is a richly illustrated selection of paintings that visually chronicles the breadth and development of Woodson's art. Together, these elements provide both a thoughtful retrospective on a significant artistic career and a visually compelling celebration of the work itself.
