Maris Holloway: The Calamity Club, Kartoniert / Broschiert

Some secrets are written in ink. Others are written in blood, loss, and memory.

In the Mississippi Delta, a flood can wash away a home. A fire can destroy a courthouse. A generation can disappear without leaving much behind.

But some things refuse to be erased.

In 1932, when the river rises and Cypress, Mississippi, is tested by hunger, hardship, and uncertainty, a battered leather ledger begins passing from one pair of hands to another. It is not an official record. It bears no government seal. Yet within its pages are names, debts, promises, favors, and obligations-quiet evidence of the people who helped one another survive when no institution would.

They call themselves the Calamity Club.

There are no membership cards. No meetings. No rules written on paper.

Only a simple understanding: when calamity comes for one, the others answer.

For Evelyn Cade, Nell Freeman, Ruth Bell, Mae Belle Crowe, June Avery, and the women whose lives become intertwined with theirs, that promise is tested again and again. Floods come. Fires burn. Families fracture. Old loyalties collide with new ambitions. And the ledger continues to travel, carrying the weight of everything the community cannot afford to forget.

But a promise made in desperate times can become a burden in better ones.

As Cypress changes and the world beyond its riverbanks begins to change with it, the women must decide what is worth preserving-and what must finally be allowed to disappear.

Decades later, the ledger remains.

Its pages hold more than names.

They hold the story of a community that survived by remembering who owed whom, who stood beside whom, and who came when the river rose.

The Calamity Club is a sweeping, atmospheric story of friendship, hardship, loyalty, memory, and the invisible bonds that can hold a community together when everything else is falling apart.

Because when disaster comes, survival is never a solitary act.
