Lutz Leichsenring: Night Rules, Kartoniert / Broschiert

Klappentext

The first comprehensive account of how cities around the world manage what happens after dark.

Written by Lutz Leichsenring, co-founder of VibeLab and the Nighttime Foundation and a fifteen-year veteran of the Clubcommission Berlin, Night Rules draws on two decades of advocacy, research, and frontline experience across more than sixty countries.

The book traces the story from the dancefloors of 1970s New York through the fall of the Berlin Wall, the rise of the Night Mayor movement, and the global pandemic that silenced the night overnight. It examines displacement and gentrification, corporate consolidation of live music, the algorithmic enclosure of cultural life, and the generational shift reshaping who goes out and what they find when they get there. It documents what cities from Amsterdam to Nairobi, from Chengdu to Medellín have learned about governing nightlife as civic infrastructure, and what happens when they fail to.

At its core, the book argues that the night is a legitimate domain of urban governance, as consequential as transport, housing, or public health. It is where loneliness is reduced, where polarization is interrupted by proximity, and where communities form across every difference the daytime insists on maintaining. Grounded in interviews with night mayors, politicians, DJs, club operators, urban planners, and cultural advocates, the book is both an analysis of what the night produces and a demand that cities start governing it as if it matters. The book culminates in ten actionable ideas for transforming how cities govern the night. Written for urban policymakers, municipal officials, cultural planners, nightlife enthusiasts, and advocates, this book offers both a passionate defense and a practical roadmap for protecting the spaces that come alive after dark.
