My Mother's Kitchen: The Kitchens of Taylor Street is a work of narrative social history that brings readers inside the Italian-American families and kitchens of Chicago's Little Italy during the 1950s and early 1960s. Told through the eyes of someone who grew up there, it preserves the traditions, values, humor, struggles, and everyday experiences of a close-knit community that has largely disappeared. The kitchens were the center of our lives. They were where families gathered to eat, argue, laugh, tell stories, make decisions, settle differences, and pass traditions from one generation to the next. At the heart of the book are the author's mother and Aunt Mary, two remarkable women whose kitchens became gathering places for family, friends, and neighbors. Through them and the people who filled their homes, Taylor Street comes alive. Drawing on personal memory, family stories, photographs, recipes, and artifacts, Louis Scalzo takes readers beyond one family's experience and into the larger world surrounding it: crowded three-flats, neighborhood stores, parish life, Sunday dinners, celebrations, street characters, family rituals, and the extended network of relatives and neighbors who helped shape a generation. Written with the intimacy and storytelling of a novel, My Mother's Kitchen uses one family's experience to illuminate something larger: how family, food, faith, heritage, and neighborhood created a sense of belonging that survived long after urban renewal, assimilation, and migration transformed the physical community. At its heart, My Mother's Kitchen is history told from inside the family-a story about the people who built Chicago's Little Italy, the world they created, and what their children carried with them after that world began to disappear.
