Life's Hidden Catalyst, Gebunden

Klappentext

Despite major advances in origin-of-life research, a fundamental question remains unresolved: how fragile chemical systems achieved the stability required for life to emerge. Yet growing evidence from geochemistry, prebiotic chemistry, and molecular biology suggests that boron may be one of the most critical-yet unrecognized-elements in the emergence and long-term stability of life, acting as a stabilizer of biomolecules, a guide in early metabolic evolution, and a regulator of biological signalling.

This book offers the first comprehensive and interdisciplinary synthesis of boron's role across the full trajectory of life-from the chemistry of prebiotic environments to the complexity of modern biological systems. Drawing on over four decades of research, it advances a unifying perspective in which life emerges not from chemical complexity alone, but from constraints that enable molecular stability and continuity.

At the heart of this framework is the concept of boron as a molecular mediator-a dynamic participant in the transition from chemical systems to biological organization. Through its unique capacity to reversibly coordinate with key biomolecules, boron enables unstable intermediates to persist and evolve. This insight points toward a broader constraint-based principle, in which the emergence of life is governed not by chemical abundance, but by the selective stabilization of viable molecular pathways.

Integrating insights from geochemistry, prebiotic chemistry, molecular biology, astrobiology, and nutritional science, the volume bridges traditionally separate disciplines and introduces concepts such as microbiota-accessible boron (MAB) and plasma-accessible borates (PAB). It further highlights boron's role not only in early chemical evolution but also as a molecular regulator of host-microbiome symbiosis, shaping the interface between microbial communities and their host environment.

This book will be of interest to researchers and professionals in astrobiology, origin-of-life studies, geochemistry, molecular biology, and bioinorganic chemistry, as well as advanced students seeking a unifying perspective on life's emergence.
