Against the backdrop of the debate over the concept of religion in contemporary religious studies, philosophy of religion, and theology, Katrin Bosse reconstructs the theology of religions developed by the two pioneers of modern theology of religion, Carl Heinz Ratschow (1911-1999) and Karl Rahner (1904-1984). She traces the location of questions of the theology of religions in the area of theological anthropology back to their foundation in the doctrine of God. The author's main thesis is that the relationship of the Christian faith to other religions is fundamentally theo-logically oriented: it stems from the understanding of God and from the understanding of God's action towards and within the world. This internal perspective cannot be replaced by a retreat into general anthropology. For the Lutheran Ratschow, the relationship between God's salvific and worldly actions and the figure of the trial of faith, and for the Roman Catholic Rahner, the relationship between nature and grace and the figure of an anonymous faith in religions, prove to be the key to accessing the diversity of religions.

In her examination of 20th-century theological concepts of religion, the author goes beyond the three-part framework of inclusivism, exclusivism, and pluralism, which continues to dominate the theological debate on religion despite all the criticism it has received. In an ecumenical context, she explores theological orientations for interreligious coexistence and dialogue beyond the well-trodden paths of the discourse in the theology of religions. Analogisation of differing perspectives from within the religions is introduced as a fruitful method in interreligious dialogue.
