From then until 751 AD, Ravenna was first the capital of the Western Roman Empire, then that of the immense kingdom of Theoderic the Goth and finally the centre of Byzantine power in Italy. Judith Herrin, Jahrgang 1942, ist em. Professorin für Byzantinistik des King's College London. Nach dem Studium in Cambridge, Birmingham, Paris und München war sie an archäologischen Forschungsprojekten beteiligt und hatte ab 1991 den Lehrstuhl für Byzantinische Geschichte der Princeton University inne. Sie ist Autorin und Herausgeberin zahlreicher Bücher zur Geschichte, Kultur- und Kunstgeschichte der Spätantike und des Byzantinischen Reiches.
