Biografie
Joseph Mitchell (1908-1996) wurde in North Carolina geboren und ging 1929 nach New York, um Journalist zu werden. Acht Jahre arbeitete er für The World, The Herald Tribune und The World Telegram, bevor er beim New Yorker zur Berühmtheit wurde. Dort erschien 1942 sein liebevoll gezeichnetes Gould-Porträt mit dem Titel "Professor Möwe", das stark zur Prominenz des schriftstellernden Stadtstreichers beitrug, und dort erschien sieben Jahre nach Goulds Tod die große Geschichte "Joe Goulds Geheimnis", auf der Goulds Nachruhm wie auch der seines passionierten Biographen Mitchell beruht. Die Neuveröffentlichung dieser beiden Porträts in einem Band wurde als literarische Entdeckung gefeiert.
