José Luis Vilson: You Already Know, Kartoniert / Broschiert

Klappentext

Math instruction doesn't have to begin with what students are missing. It can begin with what they already know.

In You Already Know, veteran educator José Luis Vilson offers a practical, classroom-tested framework for helping students build confidence, deepen conceptual understanding, and see themselves as capable mathematical thinkers. Drawing on more than fifteen years of teaching experience, Vilson demonstrates how responsive math instruction can transform disengagement into curiosity and compliance into meaningful learning.

Too often, students come to math class believing they are "not math people." At the same time, teachers face increasing pressure to accelerate learning, engage students, strengthen mathematical reasoning, and create more student-centered classrooms. You Already Know offers a different starting point: students already bring valuable knowledge, experiences, and ways of thinking to the classroom. Effective math instruction begins by uncovering and building on those strengths.

You Already Know is organized around five core principles of responsive math pedagogy:

• use what students already know
• allow more mistakes
• support students' struggle
• let students teach, too
• answer questions with more questions

These principles provide a practical framework teachers can use across a wide range of mathematical topics. Filled with classroom-tested examples and practical instructional moves, You Already Know illustrates how responsive math instruction can be woven into existing curriculum and instructional routines to create more engaging, rigorous, and authentic math learning. Through this approach, teachers learn how to:

• surface and build on students' existing knowledge and experiences
• foster productive struggle and use mistakes as opportunities for learning
• strengthen mathematical confidence, identity, and agency
• promote discourse, collaboration, and student-led thinking
• connect rigorous mathematical concepts to meaningful contexts and real-world understanding

Whether exploring percents, fractions, functions, ratios, slopes, or algebraic thinking, Vilson reveals how teachers can create learning experiences that are both intellectually rigorous and deeply engaging. His approach moves beyond false choices between procedural and conceptual instruction, demonstrating that high expectations, meaningful discourse, and strong mathematical understanding can coexist.

At a time when many students feel disconnected from mathematics and many educators are looking for practical, immediately applicable strategies, You Already Know provides a necessary shift: start with students, build from their thinking, and create math classrooms where understanding can grow.

"You Already Knowinvites us to see mathematics as a source of possibility, agency, and belonging. Carrying forward the liberatory legacy of Bob Moses and the Algebra Project, José Luis Vilson offers educators a powerful reimagining of what learning can do: not merely prepare young people to navigate the world as it is, but cultivate their capacity to ask questions, make connections, and use what they know in meaningful ways. By centering the power of questions over the pursuit of the 'right' answer, Vilson shows how curiosity can become a form of agency, helping young people see themselves as thinkers, creators, and participants in shaping the world they inherit. Grounded in hard-won practical tools and an energizing vision, this book equips educators to draw out the knowledge, insight, and potential latent in every student and to create the conditions in which that potential can flourish." - Ruha Benjamin, author of Imagination: A Manifesto

"José Vilson's You Already Know reminds us of something fundamental: students enter our classrooms with mathematical knowledge, experiences, and ways of making sense of the world that deserve recognition. Through stories from his classroom, Vilson shows us what it means to listen closely to student thinking, support productive struggle, and help young people believe in themselves as mathematics learners. He brings together mathematical rigor and responsiveness, positioning students not merely as learners of mathematics but as doers of mathematics whose ideas, identities, and experiences matter. What makes this book especially compelling is how Vilson connects what happens between teachers and students in mathematics classrooms to the larger histories, policies, and cultural forces that shape those spaces. In the spirit of Bob Moses, he asks us to think beyond access to mathematics toward agency, identity, and self-actualization. You Already Know is both practical and deeply human, challenging mathematics educators to listen more carefully to students, value the knowledge they bring, and never underestimate what they are capable of becoming." - Robert Q. Berry, III, Ph. D., Dean & Professor, School of Education, Indiana University
