John Galsworthy: Maid in Waiting, Gebunden

Klappentext

In Maid in Waiting, John Galsworthy turns from the Forsyte family to another branch of English society confronting the pressures of a changing age. The novel opens his End of the Chapter trilogy and introduces the Cherrell family, whose traditions, loyalties, and assumptions are increasingly at odds with the modern world.

At the center of the story is Dinny Cherrell, intelligent, independent, and deeply devoted to those around her. When her brother Hubert returns from overseas facing serious accusations concerning his conduct, Dinny becomes determined to protect both him and the family name. Her efforts draw her into questions of honor, law, class, love, and personal responsibility, while her own emotional life becomes increasingly complicated.

With his characteristic restraint and close observation of social behavior, Galsworthy portrays an English upper class attempting to preserve its values while the world beneath it shifts. Maid in Waiting combines family drama, romance, and social criticism in a novel concerned less with grand events than with the difficult choices through which character is revealed.
