James (Jim) V. Griffin: Beyond the Farm Gate, Kartoniert / Broschiert

Klappentext

A heartwarming, humorous and deeply authentic memoir of life on an English farm, Beyond the Farm Gate is a collection of unforgettable true stories celebrating family, friendship, resilience, and a disappearing rural way of life.

Growing up on a farm in Somerset during the Great Depression and the Second World War, Jim Griffin devoted his life to farming through a period of enormous change in British agriculture. With warmth, modesty and a natural gift for storytelling, he invites readers into a world that has now largely disappeared.

Life on the farm was anything but ordinary. From runaway horses and mischievous cows to ghost stories, escaped prisoners, wartime hardships, dramatic rescues, near disasters and unforgettable holidays, every chapter offers a new adventure. Along the way, readers meet an extraordinary cast of family members, neighbours, farm workers, veterinarians and colourful visitors, together with a memorable collection of animals whose antics are often every bit as entertaining as the people.

Although farming provides the backdrop, this is far more than a farming memoir. It is the story of growing up, accepting responsibility, overcoming setbacks, finding humour in adversity, and adapting to a rapidly changing world. Jim recalls long days in the fields, sleepless nights during lambing, the gradual replacement of horses by tractors, and the close-knit rural communities whose kindness and resilience helped shape a generation.

Written with understated wit and remarkable honesty, these stories capture both the hardships and the joys of country life without sentimentality or exaggeration. Richly illustrated with photographs and supported by historical notes, the book also preserves the traditions, customs and practical knowledge of rural Somerset before many of them disappeared forever.

Whether you enjoy memoirs, rural history, British social history, or well-told true stories filled with humour, humanity and unforgettable characters, Beyond the Farm Gate offers an engaging and rewarding journey into a remarkable life-and a timeless reminder that the greatest stories are often found in the most ordinary lives.
