Gordon Arkenberg: An Introduction to the Science of Cinematography, Kartoniert / Broschiert

Klappentext

Written in an engaging and accessible style, this book explores the science of cinematography, offering practical experiments to deepen understanding of light, colour, and optics, and enhance the craft of cinematographers.

This book bridges the fundamental physics of the visual arts, particularly the photographic arts, with creative artistry to enhance and elevate the craft of visual storytelling. It features hands-on experiments designed for educational settings, with each chapter presenting self-contained lessons that combine historical, technical, and theoretical insights. Each experiment is structured into three parts: an introduction that frames the scientific and artistic importance of the topic, step-by-step instructions with diagrams, formulas, and references to online supplements, and a discovery section that connects observation, data collection, and analysis. In the spirit of Leonardo da Vinci's advice to "first study science," this book integrates mathematics-such as algebra and trigonometry-as a concise and elegant tool to explain complex phenomena. By blending science and artistry, this book empowers readers to explore the physics behind visual storytelling. A companion volume will delve deeper into the science of cinematographic technology, focusing on measurements and tests to further expand the reader's understanding.

Ideal for students in introductory to advanced cinematography and lighting courses, as well as professional cinematographers seeking to refine their skills.
