Franco Nasi: Extreme Translations, Kartoniert / Broschiert

Klappentext

Translating texts with strong formal constraints-such as puns, anagrams, acrostics, and deliberate errors-is an extreme sport, demanding meticulous preparation, boldness, and creativity. In Extreme Translations, Franco Nasi explores these "extreme texts," examining works from George Perec's lipogrammatic novels to Peter Pereira's anagrammatic poetry, the bidirectional compositions of Boccaccio and Hofstadter, and playful verses from Gianni Rodari and the Beatles' Yellow Submarine. Through these examples, Nasi reveals how translators navigate the intricate interplay of linguistic, cultural, and aesthetic elements, transforming translation into a dynamic dialogue between literary traditions and contemporary demands.

Drawing on Italian critical phenomenology and Modern Translation Studies, the text conceptualizes translation as a hermeneutic, political, ethical, and aesthetic act. The book moves beyond the rigid theory-practice dichotomy, offering an open, critical reading of translation experiences as acts shaped by experience and reflection, discipline and creativity, constraint and freedom. With engaging insights into the ontology of literary texts and the phenomenology of translation, the volume celebrates the translator's role as a creative mediator.

The book bridges the gap between academic rigor and practical insight, offering meaningful reflections on the linguistically complex, culturally fraught, ethically demanding, yet always necessary act of translating. Accessible yet rigorous, this is an essential reading for scholars, students, and practitioners of translation studies, as well as anyone interested in the art of linguistic and cultural transformation
