The West brought two key changes to human endeavors: the mechanized factory system and the data processing automation. Each promoted globalization, later enabling the creation of oligopolies and causing a transfer of global leadership. As a result, Western democracies are no longer at the center of the universe. They will react either by reclaiming the absolute power of markets, or by promoting a deliberative governance of common goods.
