A Papacy of Confusion: The Divisive Legacy of Pope Francis

By Father Gerald Murray - Published by TAN Books Overview

The 12-year pontificate of Pope Francis stands as one of the most unprecedented and polarizing eras in modern Church history. Now that this chapter has closed, a comprehensive, objective assessment of its historical and theological footprint can finally be made. For millions of faithful Catholics, the hallmark features of this period were not pastoral renewal, but rather deep theological confusion and pastoral chaos. How did these shifts impact the average believer, and what hazards do they continue to pose to the spiritual well-being of the Mystical Body of Christ?

In A Papacy of Confusion , Father Gerald Murray--respected pastor, canon lawyer of the Archdiocese of New York, and longtime EWTN commentator--provides a meticulous and critical examination of this historic pontificate. With canonical precision and filial reverence for the office of the papacy, Fr. Murray critiques the systemic efforts to alter the Church's liturgy, doctrine, and discipline. From the weaponization of "synodality" to advance radical theological agendas to the restrictions placed upon the traditional Latin liturgy via Traditiones Custodes and the controversial approval of same-sex blessings in Fiducia Supplicans, this book serves as an essential defense of perennial Catholic truth. While Christ promised that the gates of hell would never prevail against His Church, Fr. Murray reminds us that wayward shepherds can still inflict immense damage on the flock--making the defense of Apostolic Tradition the preeminent duty of our time.

• The Sacramental Crisis: Trace how the push to admit civilly remarried Catholics to Holy Communion in Amoris Laetitia directly challenged the dogmas of marital indissolubility, mortal sin, and sacramental worthiness.

• Subversion Through "Synodality" Go behind the scenes of the multi-year synodal process to see how radical agitators used democratic messaging to undermine immutable moral truths.

• The War on Tradition: Understand the canonical and spiritual implications of the severe restrictions placed on the Extraordinary Form of the Mass, and explore the theological necessity of ad orientem worship.

• Ideological Terminology: Learn why the introduction of politically charged terms like "LGBTQ+" into official Vatican documents represents a dangerous surrender to worldly secularism.

• True Loyalty vs. Blind Obedience: Discover why resisting errors propagated by members of the hierarchy--including the Roman Pontiff--is not an act of disloyalty, but an authentic requirement of Christian charity.

From the Book

"The pressing urgency for the Church now is to justify people in violating what the Church has always taught to be binding in the realm of sexual morality... The constant and unchanged moral teaching, not the sinner, is guilty of offending God. It must be changed."
-- Chapter 2

"When error and immorality are propagated by those charged by Christ with refuting error and discouraging immorality, our duty is to call out those shepherds, rebuking them with the charity of truth."
-- Chapter 6

"The attempt here is not to convince by reason, but to intimidate into submission by making 'love of neighbor' into an ideological cudgel."
-- Chapter 8 Intended Audience
