First published in Brescia in 1614 by Floriano Canale, a cleric and polymath of the northern Italian exorcistic tradition, Del modo di conoscer et sanare i maleficiati stood for a century as a working pastoral manual, guiding priests and physicians through the diagnosis and cure of bewitchment and possession. It wove together liturgical exorcism, Galenic medicine, and sacred blessing in a single practical system, until the Roman Inquisition placed it on the Index of Forbidden Books.
