Viele nehmen sich und ihre Kunst in ihren Autobiografien sehr, sehr ernst. Eric Goulden, der 1977 seine Karriere unter dem Namen Wreckless Eric mit seinem einzigen Hit »Whole Wide World« begann, macht diesen Fehler nicht. »A Dysfunctional Success« (Ein dysfunktionaler Erfolg) ist selbstironisch, nonchalant und schwarzhumorig, beinhaltet aber dennoch das, was man von einer Musikerautobiografie unbedingt erwarten darf: eine From-Rags-to-Riches-Story. Nur dass es bei Goulden auch wieder steil zurück zu den Rags ging. Ein massives Drogenproblem ist natürlich auch dabei, in Gouldens Fall eine Amour fou mit dem Alkohol. Und eine Amour fou des selbsternannten »Donovan of Trash« zur Popmusik. Soviel Freude sie auch dem Publikum bereitet, soviel Ärger kann Popmusik den Produzenten machen. Davon kann Goulden ein Liedchen singen bzw. ein Buch schreiben.In »A Dysfunctional Success« zeichnet Goulden sein Leben nach. Geburt, Coming of Age im grimmigen England der 1960er und 1970er Jahre, beschissene Jobs und (vermeintliche) Rettung durch Pop. Er schreibt über seine Unfähigkeit, sich in die Gesellschaft einzufügen, den schnellen Ruhm und die lange Erfolglosigkeit beim Label Stiff Records, das seinen Labelmates wie etwa Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe oder Madness durchaus funktionierenden Erfolg bescherte. »A Dysfunctional Success« ist nicht nur die Geschichte eines verkannten Genies, sondern auch die subjektive Geschichte des Punk von einem, der von Anfang an nicht nur dabei, sondern mittendrin war.
