The contributors to this volume examine emotions in antiquity from the perspectives of philosophy, archaeology, and history. They understand emotions not as inner states but as actions and as phenomena accompanying action - and thus as a motor of ancient history. From this premise they trace emotions across every area of antiquity: from literature to law, politics, religion, and the military, as well as social structures and gender. They ask what emotions did in each of these areas - functions that sometimes overlap, sometimes prove specific to a single field. The rhetorical function of emotions, for instance, surfaces everywhere. The dominant emotion, however, shifts: fear in the military, grief, sorrow, and anxiety in the realm of social structures and gender. All contributions draw on theories of emotion. Each develops its own method, tailored to its discipline and open to further research.
