Often dark and biting, the works of surrealist writer Joyce Mansour have largely been forgotten. Just how worthwhile it is to rediscover Mansour is demonstrated by the conversation between her translators, Lisa Spalt and Emilie Moorhouse, on the life and oeuvre of this key author of the French avant-garde. Through the inclusion of two first-time translations, the bilingual volume offers insights into Mansour's writing, which is at once tender and brutal, humorous and unsettling: Spalt has transferred the story "Dolman, le Maléfique" into German, while Moorhouse contributes an excerpt from Mansour's most personal piece of prose, "Îles flottantes", in English. A detailed set of annotations and a bibliography provide starting points for further reading.
