Ed Walker: A Drop of Courage, Kartoniert / Broschiert

Klappentext

In the spring of 1990, as the Soviet Union begins to fracture, Alex Martin is drawn into a dangerous enterprise that reaches from the streets of Brighton and London to the forests of Estonia and the heart of a crumbling superpower. A memorable cast of allies and adversaries gathers around him: loyal friends from Brighton's activist community; a charismatic underworld figure whose motives remain uncertain; Soviet officials ranging from rigid bureaucrats to unexpectedly humane soldiers and policemen; determined Estonian patriots fighting for independence; journalists, intelligence officers and opportunists; and relentless IRA pursuers whose own mission intersects with Alex's in increasingly dangerous ways. No one possesses the whole truth. Every character sees only part of the picture, and survival depends less on force than on trust, improvisation and the willingness to work with unlikely allies. What begins with the disappearance of a cargo of vodka soon develops into something far more complex. Alex wonders whether he has been drawn into an elaborate insurance fraud. Friends vanish, loyalties shift, and the boundaries between organised crime, political idealism and state power become increasingly blurred. As Estonia moves towards independence and the Soviet authorities struggle to maintain control, he finds himself caught in a world where no one seems to know who is really in charge. A Drop of Courage is not a conventional Cold War thriller. It is a historical political thriller set during one of the twentieth century's most turbulent turning points, when the old assumptions about East and West were giving way to confusion, opportunity and danger. Against the backdrop of the collapsing Soviet system, competing political, criminal and intelligence networks pursue their own agendas as history accelerates towards the restoration of Estonian independence. Rich in historical detail and authentic atmosphere, the novel explores friendship, courage and moral compromise, asking what ordinary people do when the institutions around them begin to fail. From the ports of southern England to the frozen landscapes of the Baltic, the story combines suspense, adventure and political realism with an eye for the human consequences of great historical events. Following Lamb to the Slaughter, this second Alex Martin novel continues a series in which meticulously researched historical events provide the backdrop to gripping political thrillers. Readers who enjoy historically grounded suspense, international crime fiction and the dramatic final years of the Soviet Union will find a compelling story of survival, solidarity and the courage required to walk towards danger when there is no safe path home.
