Nate Cross really doesn't want any more magic in his life, until the night he takes a wrong turn and gets hit in the face by an angel.

In 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast of the United States, and tore a hole in time and space. Through this hole, or "Rip," magic came into our world, creating monsters and other supernatural creatures throughout the South, all the way from the Louisiana / Texas line to Miami. Nate is trying to live a simple life, running a record store in New Orleans' French Quarter and playing in a band, when he meets Ozymandias, an amnesiac angel on the run from a band of Old World vampires called Kindred. On meeting Oz, Nate's own latent magic powers are somehow awakened, transforming him into a powerful sorcerer, or Mage.

With the Kindred still chasing Oz, he and Nate meet Leo St. Germaine, a six thousand year old Kindred, who tells them about his brother Tars and his plan to capture Oz and sacrifice him in a deadly ritual, using his blood to free the vampires of the Rip to go to war with humanity. Leo opposes his brother's plans and asks Nate to help him save Oz and prevent the Vampire Apocalypse.

His own magical abilities growing daily by leaps and bounds, Nate teams up with an eclectic group, a Rastafarian sorcerer and an elf, in addition to Oz and Leo and attempts to save his friends and the city he loves while the voice of his father nags at him from the back of his mind, telling him that he's not good enough and that he's going to get everyone killed. Which could very well be true.

Nate and his friends attack Tars and his allies in their stronghold at the Monument Casino in Biloxi. Oz is captured and place on an altar to be sacrificed, Using his powers to free Oz, a bloody battle ensues and finally, Nate is able to fashion a globe of ultra-violet radiation that drives the vampires back into their coffins and destroys Tars once and for all. Oz is safe and life can return to normal.

Or can it? As Nate goes back to work and tries to relax, there's still the problem of why Oz is here to contend with, plus the mystery of Nate's new magic. As a mysterious stranger arrives at Nate's door, the feeling is inescapable that this is all just the beginning.
