The Jesus novels are read as a metalinguistic experiment in which the loss of the mother tongue exposes the fragility of language. Drawing on Daniel Heller-Roazen's concept of echolalia , fractured speech emerges as the residue of a once stable, referential language, allowing alternative, embodied forms of connection to emerge. Such forms become prominent in encounters between humans and animals that bypass shared language yet still create the impression of dialogue.
