How experimental countercultures of the 1960s shaped the Bay Area into an epicenter of urban innovation and worldbuilding
Design Radicalscasts new light on the history of Bay Area counterculture through environmental design, mapping its intersections with architecture, urbanism, and community planning. The contributors challenge familiar narratives that frame 1960s experimentation as either nostalgic antitechnology or naïve techno-utopianism, revealing how countercultural communities developed new ways of crafting, inhabiting, and imagining space in response to shifting social and ecological conditions.
Through a series of engaging essays and stories, Design Radicals explores the spatial methods that shaped alternative futures supporting intentional communities---ecofreaks, youth groups, BIPOC activists, free school educators, queer people, and others---across Northern California. The contributors examine innovative lifestyle ideas during the era's quest to materialize their alternative belief systems through worldbuilding, including adaptive urban reuse, DIY and "outlaw" building practices, multispecies communes, underground publishing as a vehicle for propagating insurgent lifestyles, queer bathhouses, and open schools. Design Radicals also explores the emergence of ecological consciousness, the influence of LSD and digital technologies on collective worldviews, and the role of design in fostering experimental forms of social organization.
Telling the stories of visionaries whose intersectional liberation practices transformed their built environment and our collective future, Design Radicalsilluminates a mission as crucial today as it was half a century ago.
