Aquaculture veterinary medicine from design through clinical procedures

Fish hatchery and farm medicine remains underrepresented in veterinary curricula, leaving practitioners without structured training before stepping onto production facilities. Aquaculture Veterinary Medicine, written by Myron J. Kebus, MS, DVM, and Michael L. Kent, BS, MS, PhD, addresses this directly. The book progresses from fish farm design and management through fish health concepts on farms and hatcheries to veterinary procedures specific to cultured fish species and culture systems.

Each chapter presents producer perspectives alongside veterinary perspectives and key concepts, reflecting the realities of on-farm practice. Coverage includes fish health management practices, applications for a wide range of cultured fish species, and true stories drawn from clinical case experience. The final eight chapters presents fish medicine for specific aquaculture environments and species.

Readers will also find:

• Detailed guidance on fish farm design, water management, and facility operations relevant to veterinary assessment and health planning
• Producer and veterinary perspectives integrated within each chapter to reflect the collaborative nature of on-farm fish health work
• Real clinical cases and true stories based on decades of field experience across diverse cultured fish species and production systems
• Content that extends beyond what online courses and lectures cover, providing depth suitable for board exam preparation and clinical practice
• Practical fish farm veterinary procedures applicable to hatchery and farm settings where production medicine knowledge is directly required

Aquaculture Veterinary Medicine serves DVM students, graduate veterinarians, fish medicine residents, and fish health professionals seeking structured, production-focused training. It also supports fisheries and aquaculture students, hatchery operators, and farm producers who collaborate with veterinarians on fish health management in cultured fish operations.
