A suffocating, tense novel about a toxic relationship between a step-mother and step-daughter. Livia is 40, she's an Italian translator living in New York and has recently started dating an American man called Arno. They quickly fall for each other and shortly after, Arno decides to take it to the next level by introducing Livia to his five-year-old daughter Emma, who he shares custody of with his ex-wife, a very WASP-y American woman called Charlotte. Livia doesn't particularly like children and has never wanted to be a mother, but she decides to put her best foot forward for the sake of her and Arno's relationship. However, she soon realises that Emma is incredibly spoiled and might also not be so open to the idea of having a step-mother. The book takes place over 12 years, in which we follow the family as they navigate this increasingly difficult dynamic. Is Emma a brat or is Livia a bad step-mother? Is 'forced motherhood' fair?
