Catherine Cookson wurde 1906 in der englischen Kleinstadt Tyne Dock geboren und wuchs in ärmlichen Verhältnissen auf. Bereits als Sechzehnjährige verfaßte sie Kurzgeschichten. Mit vierzig Jahren begann sie über das Leben der Arbeiterklasse im Nord-Osten Englands zu schreiben. Ihre Romane wurden in mehr als 12 Sprachen übersetzt, einige sind verfilmt worden.1993 erhielt sie von der Englischen Königin den Titel "Dame of the British Empire".
