Klappentext
The energy transition demands innovative storage technologies to make renewable energy usable in an efficient manner. Thermochemical energy storage (TCES) is the promising approach: It can store heat in the form of chemical bond energy with nearly no loss and release it again when needed.
This dissertation focuses on developing novel TCES granules based on calcium hydroxide, a raw material available worldwide. The entire life cycle is examined, from material development and optimization of the manufacturing process to testing under real operating conditions. Particular attention is paid to mechanical stability, heat and mass transfer, long-term durability, and high energy storage density.
The developed granules are successfully scaled up from the laboratory to the pilot scale and tested in specially designed reactors over multiple charging and discharging cycles. The investigations demonstrate their fundamental suitability for practical application. In addition, a sustainable recycling process is being developed that enables the reuse of the exhausted material in the cement industry.
This dissertation combines materials science, process engineering, and sustainability into a whole-system approach for future thermochemical heat storage systems.
