A revelatory new biography of the poet that uncovers the vulnerable private man who self-consciously played the public role of the romantic hero

He was "mad, bad, and dangerous to know"---or was he? Lord Byron (1788--1824) spent his career inventing a character, the Byronic hero. In public, he played the role to the hilt---but Byron's method acting collapsed in his private life. For two centuries, Byron's biographers have followed the poet's lead by concealing the sides of his character that contradicted the world-historical figure he wished to be. In this groundbreaking new biography, Arden Hegele, who had rare access to personal letters and manuscripts, paints a thoroughly modern portrait of the man behind the mask.

Byron was a bestselling poet, a record-setting swimmer, and a martyr to Greek freedom. But his refusal to break his Byronic character came at a heavy personal price---especially when he lost control of his reputation. Covering the full span of Byron's life and works, Hegele's riveting account reconstructs the hidden Byron by restoring what was censored out of his story---from the verses he excised to the manuscripts his friends destroyed after his death. The book's revelations include important new information about Byron's marriage, his lovers of both sexes, and his medical history, as well as new perspectives from the women in his circle.

Authoritative and enthrallingly readable, Hegele's book shows us how modern Byron was---not only as a bold, brilliant poet, but as an unrelenting curator of himself in an era when social media was print on paper. Byron said he was "born two hundred years too early." This book puts to the test his prediction that he was living not for his age, but for ours.
