This book traces the French reception of Max Stirner (1806-1856) from the publication of his magnum opus, Der Einzige und sein Eigenthum (The Unique One and His Property ) in 1844 to the early 1890s, challenging the dominant narrative that he fell into obscurity before his fin-de-siècle "renaissance."

Stirner remains among the most elusive and controversial figures in German post-Hegelian philosophy. Cast variously as a precursor of individualist anarchism, nihilism, and existentialism, he has proved exceptionally difficult to place within modern thought. Max Stirner in France argues that this difficulty stems from how his reception has been studied and seeks to move beyond retrospectively stabilized narratives, speculative claims of influence on particular intellectual traditions, and a narrow focus on canonical interlocutors. Drawing on overlooked and previously unexamined sources, and situating Stirner within France's reception of German Hegelian and post-Hegelian thought, the book reconstructs his overwhelmingly negative French reception until the first partial translations of 1892 through lesser-known writers, mediated readings, and fragmentary forms of engagement. It thereby shows that Stirner's name and ideas continued to circulate across French philosophical, religious, and political debates, serving a variety of polemical purposes. As both a reception history of Stirner and an intellectual history of France, the book illuminates nineteenth-century French political and cultural anxieties and opens the way for broader, more systematic studies of Stirner's reception across time and borders.
