This book features new translations of two iconic works of the Polish literary canon; namely, the Laments (1583) of Poland's great Renaissance poet Jan Kochanowski, and the lauded Crimean Sonnets of the Romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz, which have been retranslated here to celebrate the bicentennial of the work's first publication in Russia. Both works describe a journey into what has been called "the abyss of the soul"--the former chronicling the poet's profound grief over the sudden death of his small daughter, and the latter the exiled poet's rapture over the beauty of an unexplored exotic land.

Biografie (Jan Kochanowski)

Jan Kochanowski (1530 - 1584) war der wichtigste polnische Dichter der Renaissance. Er entstammte einem adligen Geschlecht, studierte ab 1544 an der Krakower Akademie und reiste unter anderem nach Padua, wo er längere Zeit verbrachte und die Ideale der italiänischen Renaissance aufnahm. In Deutschland und Frankreich - wo er auch Pierre Ronsard traf - rundete er seine Bildung ab. 1559 kehrte er nach Polen zurück und trat in den Dienst verschiedener Adliger. 1563 wurde er vom königlichen Hof angestellt und reiste mit dem Herrscher sogar an die Front in Lithauen. Sechs Töchter gebar ihm seine Frau, ein Sohn wurde nach seinem Tod geboren. Den größten Teil seiner Arbeit schrieb Kochanowski auf polnisch, was damals revolutionär war.
