William Butler Yeats, was an Irish poet and dramatist, and one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. A pillar of both the Irish and British literary establishments. He was a driving force behind the Irish Literary Revival, and along with Lady Gregory and Edward Martyn founded the Abbey Theatre, serving as its chief during its early years. In 1923 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation."Biografie (William Butler Yeats)
William Butler Yeats wurde am 13. Juni 1865 im irischen Sandymount bei Dublin geboren. Yeats studierte erst Kunst bevor er sich ab 1880 der Literatur zuwandte. Er lernte Oscar Wilde kennen und setzte sich sehr für die englischsprachige irische Literatur ein. William Butler Yeats gründete mit der Unterstützung von Lady Gregory 1899 das Abbey Theatres in Dublin, das spätere irische Nationaltheater und schrieb zahlreiche Stücke für sein Theater. Yeats schrieb Prosa, Lyrik, Dramen und Essays. 1923 wurde ihm der Nobelpreis für Literatur verliehen. Am 28. Januar 1939 starb William Butler Yeats in Roquebrune-Cape-Martin, in der Nähe von Nizza.
