Formed in 1987 by a group of middle-class businessmen and women, it has contested the elections since 1988 and has not yet won a seat. Its previous leader was Yip Yew Weng, before being currently led by its President Sebastian Teo and Secretary General Law Sin Ling. Its previous Secretary General Steve Chia was a member of the Parliament of Singapore as a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament. He was then the most successful opposition candidate who did not win a seat in the Singapore general election, 2001.
