Michel Tournier, geb. 1924 in Paris, studierte Philisophie und Rechtswissenschaft und arbeitete zunächst als Journalist, bevor er 1967 seinen ersten Roman vorlegte. Heute zählt er zu den großen französischen Romanciers. 1970 erhielt er den Prix Goncourt und 1993 die Goethe-Medaille.
