John Hawkes (1925 - 1998) wuchs in Connecticut, Alaska und New York auf. Er meldete sich 1943 als Freiwilliger zum American Field Service und war unter anderem in Deutschland stationiert. 1947 nahm er sein Studium an der Harvard University wieder auf. Sein erster Roman erschien 1949. Zunächst mehrere Jahre Mitarbeiter der Harvard University Press, lehrte er später Englisch in Harvard und wurde Anfang der 60er Jahre Professor für Creative Writing an der Brown University. 1961 gelang ihm in den USA der Durchbruch. Seitdem zählt er zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern der amerikanischen Postmoderne. Er starb 1998 in Rhode Island, Providence.
