Joe Simpson, geboren 1960, wußte schon mit vierzehn Jahren, was einmal sein Leben bestimmen würde: Bergsteigen und Schreiben. Er studierte Englisch und Philosophie, bevor er sich hauptberuflich dem Alpinismus widmete. Simpson lebt heute in der Nähe von Sheffield, England.
