Bis heute selbst unter vielen Genrefreunden ein unbeschriebenes Blatt,
war der in Chicago Heights geborene George Barnes (1921-1977)
ein Pionier fast aller Gitarrenstile der gerade erst aufkommenden USUnterhaltungsmusik.
Schon in den dreißiger Jahren mit der elektrischen Gitarre bestens vertraut, war Barnes Sessionmusiker auf zahllosen Aufnahmen für Labels wie Decca, Atlantic, RCA, Okeh oder Bluebird und begleitete so unterschiedliche Musiker wie Blind John Davis, Dean Hightower, Janis Martin oder Eddie Fontaine.
Von Roots-Blues, Swing und Jazz über Country, Hillbilly und Western Swing bis hin zu Rockabilly, Rock’n’Roll, Rhythm’n‘Blues und 60’s Beat glänzte der äußerlich unauffällige Mann umso mehr in seinem inspirierttemperamentvollen Gitarrenspiel und schrieb nicht wenige der gespielten Songs gleich selbst. Auf der ersten Folge der Anthologie finden sich auf zwei CDs mit insgesamt fast zweieinhalb Stunden Spielzeit stolze 59 Songs.
CD 1 mit Stücken von 1938 bis 1948, die von frühem Band-Blues über Early Country und Western Swing bis zu Ragtime-Flavours reichen. Auf CD 2 dann 31 wunderbar beseelte Instrumentals zwischen Swing und Country-Jazz (1940-1957).
