Dexter Gordon (1923-1990) gilt als einer der allerersten Bebop Tenorsaxophonisten, im zarten Alter von sieben Jahren begann er mit dem Klarinettenspiel. Als er fünfzehn war, hatte der Tenorist bereits in Bands mit Chico Hamilton und Buddy Collette gespielt! In den frühen Vierzigerjahren war er Teil der Lionel Hampton und Louis Armstrong Orchester und schloss sich der Billy Eckstine Band an und nahm 1945 mit Charlie Parker auf.
Gordon besaß einen sehr markanten und tiefgründigen Klang. In dieser Session von 1955 ist er im Quartett- und Quintettformat, unterstützt von Carl Perkins, am Klavier, Leroy Vinnegar am Bass, Chuck Thompson am Schlagzeug und auf drei Stücken mit Jimmy Robinson an der Trompete zu hören.
Considered one of the very fi rst bebop tenor saxophonists, Dexter Gordon (1923-1990) began playing clarinet at the tender age of seven. By the time he was fifteen he had already played in bands with Chico Hamilton and Buddy Collette! He formed part of the Lionel Hampton and Louis Armstrong orchestras in the early forties, and joined the Billy Eckstine band and recorded with Charlie Parker in 1945. Gordon possessed a very distinctive and profound sound. Blows Hot and Cool is Gordon’s only existing recording with pianist Carl Perkins.
