So auch bei The Hour of Separation.
ENJA RECORDS introduces a new musician to its world recording stage. Joseph Tawadros is a virtuoso on the oud and a composer who regularly stretches the boundaries of his most expressive instrument.
His new album for Enja, The Hour of Separation, is a stunning mix of the melodies and rhythms of his native Egypt with the diversity of sounds and textures from three of the world’s great jazz players – guitarist John Abercrombie, bassist John Patitucci and drummer Jack DeJohnette. And Tawadros’ twenty-one year old brother James adds masterful percussion for this most original and dynamic recording.
Recorded at Avatar studios in New York, the album highlights Tawadros’ original compositions. It is a most varied set of tunes with a depth of emotion and sublety as well as fiery instrumental energy. And one is a duet between James and DeJohnette.
Joseph Tawadros was born in Cairo, Egypt in 1983 and moved with his family to Australia in 1986. By the age of twelve he was a seasoned concert performer and now has established himself as one of the world’s leading oud performers and composers. Joseph has performed with many celebrated artists including classical violinist Ivry Gitlis, Indian tabla master Zakir Hussain, African kora virtuoso Mamadou Diabate and pop singer Neil Finn. He has helped to expand the presence of the oud in mainstream Western culture and has also been recognized in the Arab world, recently being invited to appear on the judging panel of the Damascus International Oud competition in 2009. Joseph has also composed for film with work in documentaries and short films and animated works.
"The Hour of Separation deliciously proves a new recipe: take to New York the young Egyptian-Australian lute virtuoso Joseph Tawadros, his new compositions & his younger brother / hand-drummer. Then - within a very few days - 'cook' with 3 much older North Americans - each, a leading figure in modern jazz....The result: not quite like anything you've ever heard, but very beautiful." (abc. net)
"One of the most striking features of Tawadros's seventh album is the seamless synthesis of Egyptian influences and jazz. The Hour of Separation is as much a reflection of the artist's extraordinary collaborative vision and his skills as an arranger as the players empathetic appreciation of dynamics, articulation and tone."
