Sechs Opern-Meisterwerke in herausragenden Einspielungen

Für Benjamin Britten war die Oper nach seinen eigenen Worten die »aufregendste aller musikalischen Formen«. Kein Wunder, dass der große Brite auch auf diesem Gebiet Meisterhaftes und Maßstäbliches geleistet hat. Im November 2013 feiert die Musikwelt Brittens 100. Geburtstag. Die Edition seines Gesamtwerks erlebt nun mit sechs Opern-Gesamtaufnahmen auf 13 CDs ihren Höhepunkt und Abschluss.

Im Jahr 1945 erreichte Britten mit der Uraufführung seines »Peter Grimes« internationale Berühmtheit. Auch in seinen weiteren Opern wie »Billy Budd« (1951) oder »The Turn of the Screw« (1954) gelang ihm der erfolgreiche Weg auf dem schmalen Grat zwischen Breitenwirkung und persönlichem, Anspruch eines eigenen Stils. Fast alle Opern Brittens stellen Schicksale von gesellschaftlichen Außenseitern in den Mittelpunkt. Eine Ausnahme ist »A Midsummer Night's Dream« – die Vertonung von Shakespears fantastischer Zauberkomödie, mit der Britten seine tiefe Verbundenheit mit den Traditionen der englischen Literaturgeschichte zum Ausdruck brachte. Die vertretenen Einspielungen unter den Dirigenten Bernard Haitink, Daniel Harding, Richard Hickox, Philip Brunelle und OIiver Knussen dokumentieren die reiche Britten-Pflege in England. Die Gesangssolisten (unter anderem Ian Bostridge, Felicity Lott, Thomas Allen, Angelika Kirchschlager oder Jonathan Lemalu) gehören zur ersten Riege der internationalen Opernstars.
