Er war der Cellist des 20. Jahrhunderts, war Freund und Förderer der großen Komponisten seiner Zeit, die er als Weltbürger mutig kommentierte: Erst im vergangenen Jahr gedachte die Musikwelt Mstislaw Rostropowitsch, der zehn Jahre zuvor gestorben war und 2017 seinen 90. Geburtstag gefeiert hätte. Eine große Wiederveröffentlichung seiner gewaltigen Diskografie in modernstem Remastering flankierte die beiden Gedenktage. Nun gehen die besten Tracks aus seinen vielfältigen Aufnahmen in die erfolgreichen Reihen 50 Best und 100 Best ein. Neben Sätzen aus den berühmten Cellokonzerten von Vivaldi bis zur Moderne ist »Slawa«, wie ihn seine Freunde und Weggefährten nannten, auch als Kammermusiker zu erleben – etwa in seinen späten Bach-Aufnahmen. Welchen Einfluss er als Dirigent besaß, zeigen Beispiele aus dem Repertoire der romantischen Sinfonik und Werke seiner engen Freunde Dmitri Schostakowitsch und Sergej Prokofjew.
