Derace Kingsley's wife ran away to Mexico to get a quickie divorce and marry a Casanova-wannabe named Chris Lavery. Or so the note she left her husband insisted. Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) begann seine Schriftstellerlaufbahn 1908 in London als "Dichter", entschloß sich dann aber, lieber ein guter Krimi- und Drehbuchautor in Hollywood als ein mittelmäßiger Poet zu werden. In seinen "detective stories" und Kriminalromanen setzte Chandler durch sein hochentwickeltes Formbewußtsein und das beständige Feilen an Stil, Dialog und Charakterzeichnung Maßstäbe. So formte sich bei ihm, in seiner sarkastisch-pointierten Schreibweise, der Krimiplot zu einem kritischen Gesellschaftsbild Amerikas in den 30er Jahren.
