Ko Un wurde 1933 in Südkorea geboren. Sein Leben war geprägt von Schicksalsschlägen, Lebenskrisen und extremen biographischen Wandlungen, die eng verbunden sind mit der jüngsten Geschichte Koreas: Kindheit im Bürgerkrieg; buddhistischer Mönch; Nihilist; Aktivist für die Demokratiebewegung; politisch Verfolgter; Mitgründer des koreanischen Schriftstellerverbandes; seit 1992 Professor für koreanische Sprache und Literatur in Seoul.§
