Die englische Rockformation Gentle Giant entstieg um 1970 der Asche der völlig zu Unrecht unterbewerteten Psycho-Beat-Combo Simon Dupree & The Big Sound (mit Kult-Hit „Kites“). Ihre Musik als Progressive Rock zu bezeichnen trifft das Ganze angesichts der stilistischen Breite oder auch der Vielzahl der verwendeten Instrumente eigentlich nur halb. Das Spektrum reicht von Klassik-Elementen und Renaissance-Anklängen über Folk- und Jazz-Einflüsse bis hin zu Hard Rock und Blues. Ihre ersten Platten nahm die Band noch für das Kult-Label Vertigo auf, Mitte der 70er Jahre wechselte sie zu Chrysalis, wo sie bis um 1980 insgesamt 5 Studio-Scheiben und das Live-Album „Playing The Fool“ (1976) veröffentlichten.

En bloc wird dieses Paket jetzt in einem 4er-CD-Multipack herausgebracht, inklusive einiger Bonus Tracks, darunter einer raren John Peel Session aus dem Umfeld des ersten Chrysalis-Albums „Free Hand“ von 1975.
