Mr Playford’s English Dancing Master, so heißt ein von John Playford im Jahre 1651 zusammengestelltes Tanzbuch, das sich so nachhaltiger Beliebtheit erfreute, daß es in den folgenden Jahrzehnten 17 weitere Auflagen erfuhr. Da die jeweiligen Musikstücke zu den Instruktionen für den Tanzmeister nur in einstimmigen Melodien notiert sind, gibt es sehr viel Raum für die Gestaltung und Improvisation der Interpreten.Die Lautten Compagney, die diese unterhaltsamen Stücke schon seit einigen Jahren mit großem Erfolg im Konzert spielt, verwendet in dieser Aufnahme neben den üblichen Instrumenten der Zeit auch verschiedene moderne Schlag- und „Sound“-Instrumente und schlägt damit eine Brücke in die heutige Zeit. Das Ensemble, das sich vor allem als Barockopernorchester einen Namen gemacht hat, präsentiert mit The Chirping of the Nightingale ein spannendes Programm, das nicht mehr, aber auch nicht weniger als lebendige Unterhaltung und sinnliches Vergnügen bereiten will.
